Reacting to reports that El Salvador, under pressure from China, chose to broke ties with Taiwan, Rep. Dave Brat, former World Bank employee and economist, released the following statement:

"Taiwan, ranked one of the highest for economic freedom, is a friend of the United States. Like the U.S., the Taiwanese government has let the free market drive their economic growth and prosperity. Autocratic China can't compete -- so they use their size to bully and intimidate countries into submission. Taiwan, a bulwark against Beijing's power grabbing, remains steadfast and free -- and therefore, a prime target for Chinese aggression.

"Unfortunately, for now, El Salvador seems to have succumbed to Chinese bullying by ending its ties with Taiwan. The U.S. should urge countries to stand strong against these intimidation tactics. El Salvador should seek to re-establish ties with Taiwan immediately."
